Okinawa — Why Drive?
Okinawa Main Island stretches just 120km north-to-south and narrows to a mere 4km at its thinnest point (crossable by car in 40 minutes). Yet this compact island packs subtropical jungle, emerald beaches, UNESCO castle ruins, war memorials, and US military base culture into one remarkable drive. Buses run infrequently and many northern attractions are inaccessible by public transport, making a rental car virtually essential.
Route 58 (国道58号線) is Okinawa's main artery, hugging the west coast from Naha to the northernmost Kunigami Village. The Okinawa Expressway covers the 57km from Naha IC to Kyoda IC (near Nago) in about one hour. Japan drives on the left — visitors from right-hand-drive countries should pay special attention to right turns and the swapped positions of indicators and wipers.
Northern Yanbaru Course — To the Northernmost Cape
Route: Nago → Okuma → Daisekirinzan (ASMUI) → Cape Hedo. Nago to Cape Hedo is about 54km, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes. Passing through the Yanbaru region — inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2021 — this course is a journey into Okinawa's wild heart.
Warumi Ohashi Bridge spans 315m at 37m above sea level, offering panoramic views of Haneji Inland Sea and Kouri Island. Stop at the Rikarika Warumi rest area for local food and views. Further north, ASMUI Spiritual Hikes (formerly Daisekirinzan, renovated December 2024) features subtropical karst terrain with bizarre rock formations (adults 2,500 yen; 35-minute rock course and 30-minute ocean-view course). The northernmost Cape Hedo is a dramatic cliff where the Pacific Ocean meets the East China Sea — on clear days, Yoron Island in Kagoshima Prefecture is visible just 22km away. Gas stations and convenience stores thin out north of Nago, so fuel up before heading into Yanbaru.
West Coast Sunset Course — Chatan to Onna Village
Route: Chatan American Village → Cape Maeda / Blue Cave → Cape Manzamo. Chatan to Manzamo is about 25–30km, roughly 40–50 minutes. The 27km coastal stretch through Onna Village along Route 58 and Prefectural Route 6 is called the Onna Sunset Kaido — drive it at golden hour and the East China Sea sunset fills your windshield endlessly.
American Village is a sprawling entertainment complex built on a former US military base site, featuring a Ferris wheel, shopping malls, and restaurants (free entry, free parking for 1,500 cars). After catching the sunset at adjacent Sunset Beach, head north to Cape Maeda and the famous Blue Cave. Sunlight reflecting off the white sandy bottom through crystal-clear water paints the cave interior a luminous blue — Okinawa's premier snorkeling spot (guided tours 2,500–4,000 yen). The course highlight, Cape Manzamo, is a cliff that 18th-century Ryukyu King Sho Kei named "a field where 10,000 can sit." Its elephant-trunk rock formation is Okinawa's most iconic landmark. Entry is just 100 yen, and the renovated 2020 three-story facility (souvenirs, food court, observation deck) makes visiting comfortable.
Southern Peace Trail Course — A Drive Through History
Route: Naha → Okinawa World / Gyokusendo Cave → Himeyuri Tower → Peace Memorial Park → Cape Kiyan. Circular route of about 50–60km, 2–3 hours driving (6–8 hours with visits). Southern Okinawa was the site of the final battles of the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, where over 240,000 people lost their lives.
Okinawa World's Gyokusendo Cave is a 300,000-year-old limestone cavern — 890m of its total 5km length is open to the public. The cave maintains a constant 21°C year-round (adults 2,000 yen). The Himeyuri Peace Museum (450 yen) tells the tragic story of schoolgirl nursing corps mobilized during the battle. At Peace Memorial Park, the Cornerstone of Peace bears the names of over 241,000 war dead regardless of nationality (park free, museum 300 yen). The southernmost Cape Kiyan features 10–20m cliffs where the Pacific and East China Sea divide — a site of unspeakable tragedy where civilians leapt during the war's final days. A memorial ceremony is held every June 23 on Okinawa's Memorial Day.
Kaichu Road and Island Drive — Driving on the Sea
Route: Uruma City coast → Kaichu Road (4.75km) → Henza Island → Hamahiga Island → Miyagi Island → Ikei Island. Naha Airport to Kaichu Road entrance is about 39km (1 hour); to Ikei Island about 50km (1.5 hours). Toll-free.
Kaichu Road is a 4.75km causeway built across a shallow seabed, with ocean on both sides creating the sensation of driving on water. Stop at Ayahashi Sea Station midway for local seafood and views. Hamahiga Island is the "Island of the Gods" where Ryukyuan creation deities Amamikiyo and Shinerikiyo are said to have lived — climb 108 stone steps past a torii gate to reach the sacred Silmichu Cave (free). At journey's end, Ikei Beach on Ikei Island offers pristine white sand and remarkably clear water (adults 400 yen).
The south has its own must-see scenic bridge. Niraikanai Bridge in Nanjo City is a 660m S-curve formed by two connected bridges (Nirai and Kanai). The moment you emerge from the tunnel, the Pacific Ocean and the sacred island of Kudaka-jima burst into a sweeping panorama. "Niraikanai" is the Okinawan mythological concept of a paradise beyond the sea (toll-free).
Rental Car Practical Guide — From Booking to Return
Peak season (July to mid-August, especially Obon) requires booking 3–4 months ahead; Golden Week and year-end need 2 months. Off-season (November–February) rates start at 3,000–5,000 yen/day for compacts, while peak season reaches 6,000–12,000 yen. The most convenient pickup location is DFS T Galleria next to Naha's Omoromachi monorail station, where 7 rental companies have counters on the 2nd floor — step off the monorail and straight into paperwork.
Insurance is essential: CDW (Collision Damage Waiver, 1,100–2,200 yen/day) and NOC coverage (500–1,500 yen/day) waive your deductibles (vehicle 50,000–100,000 yen + property 50,000 yen) and non-operation charges (20,000–50,000 yen). Gas follows the "full-to-full" rule — fill up near the return point and keep the receipt. ETC cards (highway toll) aren't included in rentals — rent one separately (300–500 yen/day) or use cash toll lanes. An International Driving Permit from Geneva Convention countries is valid; note that mainland Chinese licenses are not accepted in Japan.
Seasonal Drive Recommendations
January–February, Cherry Blossom Drives: Japan's earliest cherry blossoms — deep pink kanhizakura — bloom from north to south. Motobu Town's Yaedake features 7,000+ trees along a 4km mountain road forming a cherry tunnel (2026 festival: January 17–February 8), while Nago Castle Park has 3,800 trees along a 2km path (one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots; 2026 festival: January 31–February 1). At 15–20°C, it's perfect for windows-down driving.
Summer (July–September) is when Kaichu Road's sea sparkles most brilliantly and Blue Cave snorkeling peaks. Watch for typhoons (July–October) and always check forecasts. Autumn (October–November) is the hidden best season — tourists thin out, rental prices drop, and comfortable 22–27°C temperatures make the long northern Yanbaru course a pleasure. Winter (December–February) offers humpback whale watching from Zamami Island (January–March, 90%+ encounter rate, about 5,500 yen) combined with cherry blossom drives for a uniquely Okinawan winter experience.
