Everyone who sees Okinawa's ocean for the first time has the same reaction — "Is this really Japan?" Coral Reefs & Kerama Blue — What Makes Okinawa's Beaches Special
The secret behind Okinawa's stunning seas lies in coral reefs. Coral reefs block waves to create calm lagoons inside, while fragments of coral and shells accumulate to form dazzling white sand. The water is crystal clear because coral acts as a natural filtration system.
The swimming season runs from early April to late October — about two months earlier than mainland Japan. Peak season is July–August, but May–June (around the rainy season) and September–October (watch for typhoons) are less crowded and recommended. Even in winter, water temperatures hover around 20°C, making snorkeling possible with a wetsuit.
The main hazard is jellyfish. The Habu-kurage (box jellyfish) appears June–October and is highly venomous. Always swim within jellyfish prevention nets at managed beaches. Rash guards are essential.
Northern Beaches — Sesoko, Emerald, Kouri Heart Rock, Okuma
Northern Okinawa (Yanbaru) is 1.5–2 hours from Naha, but is home to the most beautiful natural beaches.
1. Emerald Beach — Right next to Churaumi Aquarium, selected for Japan's "Top 100 Swimming Beaches." Divided into three zones — "Play Beach, View Beach, Rest Beach" — with jellyfish nets and lifeguards on duty. Perfect for families. Free admission and parking.

3. Kouri Beach & Heart Rock — Cross the 2km Kouri Bridge to reach the "Island of Love." Two heart-shaped rocks standing side by side at Tinu Beach, made famous by a JAL commercial, make this a lovers' pilgrimage.
4. Okuma Beach — A private resort beach with roughly 1km of natural white sand at Okinawa's northern tip. Adjacent to Yanbaru National Park, enjoy forest and ocean together.
