Just 50 minutes by air from Naha, about 300 km southwest of Okinawa's main island, Miyakojima greets you with an ocean that looks different. An impossible gradient from emerald green to cobalt blue — a color so vivid that cameras can't capture it. This color has a name: "Miyako Blue."
The secret lies in geology. Miyakojima is entirely made of uplifted coral limestone, with a maximum elevation of just ~115 m. No mountains means no rivers. When it rains, the porous limestone absorbs the water instantly into the ground, so sediment never reaches the ocean. The result: visibility exceeding 40 meters, among the clearest seas on Earth.

Nature's Sculpture — Sunayama Beach
Climb over the sand dune from the parking lot, and a natural arch carved from Ryukyu limestone by waves appears before you. Sunayama Beach — the most photographed spot on Miyakojima.
"Sunayama" literally means "sand mountain" — you must climb over a sand dune to reach the beach. At sunset, the golden light filtering through the arch is considered Miyakojima's best photo spot.
