Ryukyu Mura Okinawa Guide — Traditional Houses and Cultural Experience Theme Park

What Is Ryukyu Mura?

Ryukyu Mura (Ryukyu Village) is a traditional Ryukyuan culture theme park located in Onna Village on Okinawa's central west coast. Since opening on October 23, 1982, the park has showcased 10 relocated traditional houses from across Okinawa, of which 7 are designated Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Properties. The oldest, the former Nakasone family residence, was built in 1808 and boasts over 200 years of history.

Shisa and Bingata — The World of Ryukyuan Crafts

The shisa is Okinawa's guardian lion-dog, placed on rooftops and gateposts to ward off evil spirits. Painting your own shisa figurine is the most popular activity at Ryukyu Mura.

Bingata is a traditional stencilled resist dyeing technique that flourished in the 14th-century Ryukyu Kingdom. A synthesis of Indian, Chinese, and Javanese dyeing processes, it features vivid depictions of flowers, fish, and birds in brilliant colors.
